The Crack

Yesterday,

I saw The Crack.

That ancient place

Where coldness lies.

Is this my root?

My foundation?

This lonely place,

My base

Of life?

I thought it was

My origin,

When it came knocking

On my door,

My “stomach-tired,”

My “must sit down,”

My “earth is shaking

In my core.”

But this one time,

Sat face-to-face,

With ancient friend,

So deep, and dark,

I had the courage

To ask it, then,

“Just who are you-

Where did you start?”

The Crack, it wavered,

It lightened, then,

To my surprise,

And my delight,

Under steady

Observation,

The monster faded

From my sight.

The Crack dissolved,

It’s light transformed,

It’s prickly form

Turned inside-out,

A starry warning,

An exclamation,

A potent protector,

Sworn to help.

I breathed relief,

And disbelief,

And wondered how

I was so wrong!

How, sinking shadow,

And fearful fate,

Was just an ally,

All along.

My base is clear!

My root is free!

A softness, settling,

Warm, like doves,

Thank the Goddess!

All this time,

The root of me

Was only love.
